Handknit memories

There are few things quite as magical as watching your favorite person experience your favorite place. For us, that place will always be the Monterey Bay Aquarium, perched right on the edge of the breathtaking Monterey coastline. The salty ocean breeze, the sparkling blue water, and the endless wonders beneath the surface never fail to capture our hearts.

On our most recent trip, the day was made even more special by a very special piece of handiwork. My little guy was wearing his hand-knit yoke sweater—easily my favorite item I have ever made. Putting hours of stitches into a tiny garment is a labor of love, but seeing him run around in it, exploring the exhibits against the backdrop of the deep blue bay, made every single stitch and woven end entirely worth it.

As we strolled along the outdoor decks looking out at the water, a stranger walked past, glanced down, and smiled.

"I really like your sweater!" they said.

Without missing a beat, my favorite little human beamed, looked right at them, and proudly announced, "Thank you! My mommy made it."

My heart completely melted. In that moment, all the yarn, the pattern adjustments, and the late-night knitting sessions came together into something far greater than just a piece of clothing. It was a bridge of connection, a spark of pride, and a sweet memory we will both cherish forever.

Here’s to many more adventures, handmade wardrobes, and days spent by the sea.
